For the Bsc Paediatric Training Programme (PTP) together with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) and Makeni School of Clinical Sciences (SCSM) in Sierra Leone German Doctors e.V. is looking for a:
Medical Programme Coordinator (MD)

 

Position within the organisation

As Medical Coordinator for the PTP you will report to the German Doctors' (GD) project officer in charge in Bonn. You will work closely with the GD country representative in Sierra Leone and the GD administrative coordinator in Sierra Leone as weil as the voluntary short-term paediatricians and the teams at our partner hospitals.

Background:

In October 2021, MOHS of Sierra Leone together with German Doctors started a specialized paediatric training program (PTP) for clinical officers at the School of Clinical Sciences in Makeni. German Doctors and the SCSM closely collaborate in this project with two other international NGOs: CapaCare and Partners in Health (PIH), respectively responsible for the specialties surgery/obstetrics and internal medicine. The medical programme coordinator is based in Masanga Hospital.

Responsiblities

  • »Evaluate and monitor students' progress and the training programme. But also support and supervise them as the contact in place (the medical coordinator is responsible for daily supervision and clinical work, supported by short-term pediatricians if available)
  • »Regular visits to partner hospitals to review students' development, situation on site and standards
  • »Evaluation of possible partner hospitals for future rotations in collaboration with the GD representative
  • »Support the physicians at the partner hospitals (MS, pediatricians, tropical doctors) in the evaluation at the end of a clinical rotation
  • »Coordinate student rotation and selection of new candidates
  • »Responsible for the curriculum development/review, organise short-courses and hast international and national trainers. Supported by a medical core group.
  • »Regular contact with the medical contact persons of the partner organisations and attendance in steering committee meetings with Capacare and Partners in Health
  • »Establish a network of national pediatricians and trainers
  • »Support short-term deployment unit in Bonn with selection of voluntary short-term pediatricians
  • »Joining the on call schedule in Masanga Hospital and providing supervision on the wards
  • »Any other duty as assigned by the project officer in charge

Additional responsibilities, if required:

  • »Provide and support theoretical courses and skills training
  • »Patient care (e.g. outpatient clinic and ward rounds, performing operations)
  • »Consulting role for other GD projects in Sierra Leone from a medical view
  • »Join meetings with stakeholders as MoHS and SCSM
  • »Join the ongoing research regarding the pediatric training programme and pediatric care in Sierra Leone

We are looking for

  • »A Medical Doctor with medical education in tropical medicine and paediatrics, preferably with maternity experience (able to perform complicated deliveries and caesarean sections)
  • »A minimum of three years of clinical work and previous relevant experience in working in low- resource settings and/or for a health NGO is highly appreciated
  • »Experience in a coordinating and/or supervisory roles
  • »Excellent (intercultural sensitive) communication, organisational and interpersonal skills
  • »Stress resilience, flexibility and ability to multi-task in a challenging environment
  • »Fluency in English, both written and spoken
